Back in Business

When we arrived in Rhode Island in 2019, I made the conscious decision to leave my freelance photography work behind in San Diego. After what were some of the more challenging years of my life, I thought I needed the stability and routine of a 9-5; something consistent and reliable. And I found it. But fast forward through the demands of working and parenting and existing during a global pandemic, and I was left feeling flat and tired, like so many of us were—and still are. I was watching myself becoming less and less of who I wanted to be and having less and less time—and energy—to do the things that made me feel like me.

Then, two things happened.

One was our summer road trip to Maine. I felt more energized and inspired and relaxed than I had in ages. Nothing felt forced. Sure, it was a vacation, but this was different. I loved researching and planning the itinerary for that trip, seeking out the shops and restaurants and neighborhoods that make a place really shine. I was more purposeful in how I captured our adventures, shooting some of my favorite digital and film images of the year. And after receiving more DMs than I expected, asking for recommendations and advice, I especially loved writing about the experience. I wanted more of that.

Not long after that trip, I began to collaborate on projects with a few local small businesses owners. There’s little I love more than photographing beautiful places, spaces and objects. So even though those shoots and edits had to be squeezed in on the margins of what little free time I had, they energized me and sparked my own creativity. I wanted more of that.

It didn’t take me long to recognize that I didn’t just want more of that—I needed more of it. So, I gave my notice and wrapped up my final projects at work. (They could not have been more gracious and understanding, for which I’m eternally grateful.)

Now, here I am: FREELANCER. Admittedly, I’m a bit nervous to build a business from the ground up, but it feels really good to be excited about work again.

More to come about the services I provide, but a quick note to say that they do extend beyond photography. While that will always be the heart and soul of what I do, I am offering more comprehensive creative support packages, designed and priced for small businesses. If that sounds like something you might need, let’s talk.

Work aside, I’m always up for a photo walk if anyone is in the area and wants to wander with me. Send me a note and let’s connect!
