Notes From The Week That Was - January 29, 2022

Coming at you live from Snowmaggedon 2022, here are a few of my favorite things from this week:

Bacon Naan Rolls

Newport has a wonderful restaurant scene, but one of the cuisines that we don’t have easy access to in this area is Indian. My husband and I have been lovers of Indian food since we were dating (I remember taking him on a lunch date to a restaurant on Damen Avenue in Chicago—iykyk), but we have lived in some Indian food deserts in our life. (Good luck finding decent curry in Naples, Italy.) As a result, we have cooked it at home for ages. Last year, we purchased the eponymous cookbook from Dishoom, the well known UK-based restaurant company, and not only is it filled with wonderful recipes, the images and writing are sublime. Some of our favorite meals, Indian or not, come from it. (If you’re feeling adventurous, try the spicy lamb chops. They are unreal.) This week, our “Breakfast For Dinner” menu included their Bacon Naan Rolls, which have a bit of a cult following. Don’t be intimidated—we cheat and use naan from Trader Joe’s, and the tomato jam comes together easily. The result is sweet and savory and spicy and all sorts of goodness. Treat yourself and give it a go.

Greenhouses in Winter

I went on a drive this week that took me past the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Mass. Having read about the 1800s-era greenhouse, I decided to visit. It was a sunny day and stepping into the warm and humid greenhouse was such an immediate mood lifter that I decided greenhouses should be on every New Englander’s winter survival list. Bonus for anyone considering a visit: February and March are camellia season and a whole section of the greenhouse is dedicated to these blooms, so plan your winter pick-me-up outing now!

A Properly Fitting Shirt for Fellow Tall Girls

At 5’11, when I find something that fits me beautifully straight off the rack, I have to shout about it. Meet the Sézane Tomboy Shirt. What can I say? Sleeves that hit my wrists; shirttails that stay tucked in—or look chic untucked. Worth the investment.

Abbott Elementary (ABC/Hulu)

No one is more surprised than me to be writing about how much I like a network sitcom, but Abbott Elementary is genuinely funny. It is perfectly cast and the mockumentary production style (reminiscent of The Office) makes the characters even more charming—or more awful, in the case of the principal. And beyond being enjoyable, it comes across as a heartfelt tribute to teachers, something that feels much needed right about now.

For everyone in the path of this weekend’s storm, I hope you’re staying safe and warm!
